We are hoping for a good entrance of small salmon, but so far it is merely wishful thinking. The situation is really miserable only a few days before the opening of the season. Smaller salmon records, dropped 48%. Medium salmon dropped 18%. Big salmon increased 30%. Consequently the average weight rose from 3 kilos in 2006 to 3,5 kilos in 2007. Out of the total 44,3 ton catch record in the Tana River 2007, merely 12,3 tons was caught by sporting anglers.
The remaining part was caught on various methods of net fishing by locals. Both posted and drifting nets, in addition to other local salmon traps.
Consequently pure rod based rivers, such as Gaula, Orkla, Namsen and Alta river should be more attractive destinations for sporting anglers than Tana River.
