Forecast for Stabburselva

Fishing for big salmon on the Lombola stretch.

What a salmon! 12,8 kg. A Duck Special Spoon dangles from its jaw. Mr. Egil Persen from Alta just had yet another golden moment on the Lombola stretch. However this is not his biggest salmon. The record was caught on fly some years back, and was a staggering 19,6 kg. Never the less the same feeling of thrill and awe is present every time a big salmon is landed. To catch and land a big salmon is always an unforgettable experience.
Mr Egil Persen owns a cabin in Stabbursdalen valley. This is where he spends his entire summer. If you are hunting for the big salmon, the time to come here is from 18`th of June until 1`st of July. Everybody wants to fish in Fossekulpen, but only 5 permits are sold there. The fishing is also regulated from the suspension bridge and down to the outlet. But the chances of a catch are just as good in the remaining parts of the river.
On the 12 km long stretch from the campsite and up to pond Fossekulpen, there are an unrestricted number of permits. And the same thing goes for the long stretch above Fossekulpen and up to Njakkagorzze, where the salmon is forced to stop. Late season it is a lot of salmon here, and few people. Not everybody has the health for this walk, even though the odds for a major catch are high. Stabburselva. Outlet.

Stabburselva River is sensitive to change of water level. Upon flooding , several of the fishing spots are unavailable. But upon normal conditions, plenty of fine locations are evenly spread throughout the river. In order to have success you need to familiarize yourself with the river and the holding grounds.
The smartest thing to do is to rent a local guide to show you some methods and some specific spots. Maybe you will meet Mr. Egil Persen too, at his favourite spot. He might even invite you into his cabin for a coffee and some fishing talk. If you are lucky he will disclose the super fly on which he caught the 19 kg salmon, but if you arent so lucky as to be there exactly for this, Mr Persen can reveal that Thunder And Lightning is a good fly in the river.
Like most experienced fisher men, he is generous in advice and gladly shares advice on his secrets to newcomers in this fantastic river. Frode Andersen, Reidar Myland, Roger Josefsen og Ronny C. Schmidt.

Big Salmon River

The outlet to Porsanger Fjord, is wide and shallow. The 9 km stretch up to Lombola is a mix of fine white water rapids and attractive pools with good spawning and fishing grounds. Lombola is a stretch of 3 km slow current ponds, where especially one small pool suggests itself as a hot spot. Above Lombola is another couple of hundreds meters of rapids, and then a new 3 km stretch of slower current ponds called Ulveluobbal.
The last zone up to the big waterfall Stabbursfossen is a popular area with many fine locations. Above the stairs, the river is more rapid, with many little falls, but my goodness what fantastic locations are found here! At Njakkagorzze, 30km from the sea, both salmon and fishermen must come to a stop. Upon optimal river conditions, some salmons are able to enter merging Rivers Dbbojohka and Njakkajohka.

Upper parts of River Stabburselva are the land of Huge Browns

Upper Stabbursdal river, where salmon, sea char and sea trout is unable to migrate, is an extremely attractive trout river, holding fish at 6kg, averaging 1-2kg! Some of these are exposed to quite much fishing, but never the less some monster species of trout and char are to be found here. Just ask Mrs Anne Britt Larsen, phn +47 78464761 who managed to land a 6,35kg trout! It was an incredible 79 cm long, and was lured by a Mepps Spinner, hearth shaped, silver and green. Yes this is certainly the mountain paradise of Mrs Anne Britt Larsen.
