The best spot in Norway for pike and perch

The Steinsfjord is one of the definitive hotspots on fishing Norway for pike and perch. With its mild eastern Norwegian climate and its central location only half and hour from Oslo by car, and its swelling scenery, the lake is a popular destination for anglers from abroad. Each summer, more than 1000 pikes, and some huge amount of bass (some of which are 60 cm) are caught from the rental boat of Mr. Erling Elsrud alone. Mr. Manual Schrants proudly displays his major catch last year, a long beast measuring 1,25m. However, on the catches of the plenty German and Dutch anglers, 9 out of 10 pikes are released into the lake.

The fight is on!

The most experienced anglers are at site from ice break, but the best fishing time is from May to June 15`th. The huge female pikes and the smaller male pikes are then starved after their wedding celebrations on the shallower waters. Like a submarine in camouflage, the pike glide to deeper waters in search of it’s pray. Like a suspended steel spring it stands on the steep end, ready to explosively attack any pray with its pointy sharp teeth, be that pray fish or wobblers.
And the reaction comes just as fast as the strike. Just as it feels the sting of the hook, it counter strikes with its tail. Upon your quick counterstroke, the line immediately haul out of the screaming reel. Then the huge animal takes off into the air making the surface explode. You lower the rod to avoid line brake. The fight is on.

The pike follows smaller fish

The huge pike and perch is normally found at varying depths, all depending upon where the minor fish are. During the warm mid summer days, it is normally found moping at the bottom floor of the deepest waters. But as soon as the water cools down in the end of August and in September and October, it is again on the move in the free waters hunting for food, building up its stature for the long quite winter season. In this period you might come across it everywhere food is to be found. Are you fishing from boat, always cast against the wind. The pike is always facing the current and the direction of the waves.

The pike is an eager hunter, attacking anything that moves

Many anglers fish first for bass, and then proceed to use the bass for pike bait. Bass is great pike bait, but many prefer to use wobblers, anything from the bass look-alike models to the more glaring doodads. A starved pike will attack more or less anything that moves out there on the steep end of the shallow waters.

Fishing for pike in Steinsfjord, or aiming for huge trout in the Tyrifjord

One of the advantages of renting a boat from Mr. Erling Elsrud in Hole, is the combined fishing between Steinsfjord and Tyrifjord. You may first fish for the huge pikes and bass in Steinsfjord, and then proceed to trolling in the Tyrifjord where trout might reach giant sizes up to 15-20 kilos. While you almost have a daily catch guarantee in the Steinsfjord, you better prepare for patience upon trolling for the record breaking trout of the Tyrifjord. Morten Opsahl

Fishing is now available throughout river Storelva and all the way to Hønefoss downtown

Starting from the Tyrifjord, you may now proceed by boat all the up to downtown Hønefoss on river Storelva. The river is marked for navigation and a dock is in construction at Gladtvedt, in the middle of town. In Storelva you might fish for pike and bass both off and on shore all summer. In the beginning of August, you can troll or cast for the trout that migrate through on its way up to river Ranselva for its spawning grounds. Each year 10+ kilo fish is brought on shore.

13 year old boat owner and fishing guide

Mr. Erling Elsrud will eventually get good help in his daughter, 13 year old Benedicte. She now has her own boat for rental, and takes any opportunity to pump her father for little clues that she might exclusively offer her guests. But remember to wear a life vest she adds, rough waters and sudden winds may take anyone by surprise.
