New world record for halibut
New world record for halibut
Mr.Stefan Luhering and his giant halibut.
Mr. Stefan Luhering, from Hamburg in Germany, broke the world record by landing a 194 kilo halibut. The record fish was caught on a 300gr Giant Jighead-Jig. He was rod fishing from boat outside Torsvåg in Troms county at 18.00 hrs, Sunday 20`Th of April 2008.
He was alone in the boat when the monster halibut struck, and the fight lasted for two hours before he managed to haul the 2,42 m grand-piano-like flake up alongside his little boat. In order to secure the beast, Mr. Luhering tried to harpoon it several times, but failed, Mrs Sonja Karlsen (Manager of Torsvåg Havfiske) informs us.

Mr. Luhering then called Mr. Bjørnar Fløystad from Torsvåg Ocean Fishing and pled for mercy and help to bring the catch to the docks. In the moment of extreme stress, Mr Luhering dropped his phone, so at first he couldn’t be found at the open seas. But eventually the “rescue group” from Torsvåg Ocean Fishing spotted him and arrived at the scene. After a lot of glad fuss the precious super halibut was finally brought ashore at Torsvåg. Since the old world record was at 190 kilo, a notary public was needed in order to register the catch. However the police in Tromsø didn’t have time to come all the way out to Torsvåg that day, so the halibut was strapped down and brought to town instead.

The record breaking halibut struck at 30 m depth. Last Wednesday Mr. Luhering caught two minor halibuts at the same location. Mr. Stefan Luhering has specialized in halibut fishing. On his 5 days vacation last year, he landed 7-8 halibuts on his jig.

Torsvåg Ocean Fishing is among Fishing Norway’s recommended places on 5-star Ocean Fishing locations. The fishing camp sits on the idyllic peninsula Koja at Vannøya. 90 km north of arctic capitol Tromsø. The fishing fields around Vannøya is among the best in Troms county. The camp has an active environment for ocean fishing, splendid catch records and proximity to the fishing grounds. This is the location indeed, if you are passionate about ocean fishing and are looking for the genuine deal.
